HOWLAND — Forum Health Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital announced the appointment of its new medical director, Dr. Cynthia DiMauro.

A board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, Dr. DiMauro came to Hillside from Canonsburg General Hospital, Canonsburg, Pa., where she served as medical director for Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation and Outpatient Department at Canonsburg since 1987. She was also director for the Spinal Cord Injury Program at D.T. Watson Rehabilitation Hospital in Sewickley, Pa., from 1987 to 1993.

Dr. DiMauro earned her medical degree from American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in Montserrat, British West Indies, after receiving an undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University. She completed residency training in physical medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Health Science Center in Dallas.

With a special interest in neuro-rehabilitation, Dr. DiMauro said she and Hillside are a natural fit. She said she was attracted by the comprehensive stroke, spinal cord and brain injury programs at Hillside and impressed by the way the staff works with patients as well as their progressiveness in the rehabilitation field.

“They [staff] work together in centers rather than separate specialties. It’s truly a progressive philosophy and approach to care that melds the lines dividing specialties and allows the patient to be seen and treated as a whole person,” Dr. DiMauro said.

As medical director, Dr. DiMauro plans to further develop outpatient programs to enhance the continuity of rehabilitation services for patients and the community.

She enjoys skiing, listening to music and playing the piano. She and her husband Keith have been married 22 years and have a teenage daughter, Rachel.
