Group focuses on building
for Brookfield schools

BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield Bond Issue Committee is looking for public opinion on where a new school building should be located.

School district residents will vote in November on a 7.4-mill bond issue to raise local funds to build and maintain a new K-12 building. The committee will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the Brookfield High School cafeteria and will conduct a survey asking people what they want in a new school, whether it should be one or two floors and where it should be located.

The Ohio School Facilities Commission has pledged $20.1 million toward the proposed $31 million project. The bond issue will cover the local share of construction as well as provide funds for long-term maintenance of the facility, a committee spokeswoman said.

The committee will continue to have meetings at the high school at 6 p.m. every Monday until election day.

Girard police probe fight
at football practice

GIRARD — Police are investigating a fight Wednesday between two women at a practice for a little league football team.

A 35-year-old Stull Avenue woman told police she was watching her son’s football practice on Trumbull Avenue when she dropped $5 out of her pocket. The woman said a little girl picked the money up and hid it.

Reports said the woman told officers that another person told her the girl had the money, so she asked the child for the money. But the girl “took off running.” She cornered the girl, who she gave the money back, the woman but was later confronted by the girl’s mother — a 30-year-old Emma Street woman.

The Stull Avenue woman told police that the women got into a fight in which she was struck. Reports say the Stull Avenue woman also told officers the fight caused football practice to end 15 minutes early. No arrests were made.

Funding for sidewalks
will benefit Salem

SALEM — The city will receive $200,000 to install 1,200 feet of new sidewalks in 2010 and 2011, the Ohio Department of Transportation said Thursday. But neither ODOT spokesperson Beck McCarty nor city Service Director Joe Julian know where the sidewalks are to be located. ODOT says the sidewalks are to be located on East State Street. Julian has said he wants to add sidewalks at the east end of the city. The sidewalks now end at Southeast Boulevard. Past Southeast, there are multiple vehicle entries to store parking lots, but no sidewalks. There are some grassy areas between some of the stores. ODOT provided the funds under a program to promote healthier forms of transportation, such as walking and bicycling.
