YOUNGSTOWN — A 56-year-old Penn Avenue man was arrested on a felonious-assault charge after telling police he shot Terry Marlowe, 43, of McGuffey Road, around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, reports show.

Marlowe was in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center. He was hit three times, twice in the back and once in a leg.

Kenneth D. Berch told police that an argument started at his home when Marlowe refused to share his crack cocaine. Berch said he became angry and tried to hit Marlowe with a golf club and then grabbed a machete when Marlowe took control of the golf club. Berch said he grabbed a gun and fired three times after being pushed by Marlowe, reports show.

Marlowe ran out and fell to the grass and Berch put the handgun in a dresser drawer, police said. Officers confiscated the gun and the machete.

Patrolman reprimanded

SALEM — City Patrolman Robert Keister, 37, of Salem, has received a verbal reprimand for causing an on-duty traffic accident about 6 a.m. Tuesday on South Lincoln Avenue and Franklin Street.

City Safety Director Scott Cranmer said that would be the city’s only penalty against him. The Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated the crash. The patrol cited Keister with failure to yield the right of way. He will have to pay any fine.

Ruth Ann Lipp, 70, of Salem, was driving a pickup truck west on Franklin Street and had the green light at the intersection. The patrolman was driving south on Lincoln Avenue with the cruiser’s red lights on. His cruiser struck the pickup when the vehicles were traveling about 25 mph. Both drivers had minor injuries, the patrol said.

Cranmer said the city may wind up paying for some or all of the damage to both vehicles. He didn’t know if the city might pay for the costs outright or through its insurance. He had no estimate of the damages.

Wounded in stabbing

YOUNGSTOWN — Andre Underwood, 23, of Parkhill Avenue, was in stable condition Thursday at St. Elizabeth Health Center after being stabbed in the stomach, right arm and nose.

Officers on their way to Underwood’s home around 12:40 a.m. Thursday came across a car with its lights out traveling on Parkhill and discovered Underwood in the passenger seat. It wasn’t immediately clear who was driving.

Underwood told police that he was stabbed with a small pocket knife by an ex-girlfriend who knocked on his door and then tried to push her way in. The woman then drove away, reports show.

Temporary closing

BOARDMAN — The township’s compost site on Southern Boulevard will be closed Saturday because of staffing issues.

Hydrant flushing

MINERAL RIDGE — Officials from the Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer’s Department will be flushing fire hydrants Monday through Sept. 28. In the meantime, area residents may experience low water pressure and water discoloration.

Scholarship yard sale

YOUNGSTOWN — The Seventh Ward Coalition is having its annual yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Ipe Field, Midlothian Boulevard and Lemoyne Avenue. Proceeds will go to the group’s scholarship fund.

Motorcyclist injured

SALEM — A Salem man was in stable condition Thursday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown after a motorcycle accident at state Route 9 and Conser Drive. Robert McMaster, no age available, was driving a motorcycle northbound on state Route 9 about 11:35 a.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a tree trimming truck that did not stop when it drove from Conser Drive onto the state highway, police said. No charges have been filed.

Bookmobile celebration

WARREN — The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library will celebrate the arrival of its new bookmobile with a free, public grand opening event between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Main Library at 444 Mahoning Ave. N.W. The celebration will kick off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. followed by a comedy magic show and other activities.
