Women’s soccer team loses to Robert Morris
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown State soccer team outshot Robert Morris 14 to 11and out numbered the Colonials seven to six with shots on goal. However, Robert Morris' goal at 25 minutes into the play proved to be the game winning shot in YSU's 1-0 loss.
Senior Tessa Brookman took the first shot for YSU that was just high of the net. Jordan Gapczynski and Lauren Brennan each attempted a shot before RMU's Jaimie Morra netted her first goal of the season. Morra fired her shot off a pass from Kathleen Caggiano.
Junior Carrie Wack came near scoring for the Penguins with a shot that was saved by Jessica Onufer. Seconds later Lauren Brennan made another attempted to score that was stopped by a Robert Morris defender.
In the second half, the 'Guins took seven more shots in hopes of tying the game. Freshman Taylor Pickens' shot was saved while Erin Gilmour totaled two that were both wide of the net. All four of Brennan's shots for the night were also saved.
The defense held the Colonials for the entire second half. Goalkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney finished with five saves for the game.
Head Coach Anthony James said that the team created many scoring opportunities, but needed to capitalize on them.
"Once again I felt that our team played a very complete game," said James. "I was impressed with the overall performance."
YSU will host the Penguin Soccer Classic this weekend at Stambaugh Stadium. The Penguins are set to face Albany at 7 p.m. on Friday evening.
Boney, Rogner named
YOUNGSTOWN — Penguin golfers Mollie Boney and Katie Rogner were named HL co-players of the week for the first week of the fall season.
Boney, a junior and Rogner a freshman, each tallied 156-stroke totals as Youngstown State claimed the title at its own fall invitational. Rogner paced the Penguins in the opening round with a 76 and Boney capped the victory with a team best final round of 76. Performances from these two athletes and other Penguin teammates gave YSU their first YSU Invitational crown.
Last year Boney led the Penguins with an average of 87.8. Notably, her lowest score a 77 at the North/South Intercollegiate Tournament. This will be her first career place in the top three of any tournament she has competed in with YSU.
Rogner, a freshman from Warren, Ohio (Warren JFK) was a first team All-Ohio selection in 2006, finished fourth at the OHSAA State Division I Golf Tournament. A four-time team MVP, she was the Steel Valley Conference medalist three years of her career with JFK.
YSU will shoot for another tournament crown September 23 and 24 at the St. Francis (Pa.) Fall Invitational.

Phantoms midgets
third in tournament
BOARDMAN — The Phantoms Midget Major AAA (U-18) finished 1-2-1 and in third place in the Motor City Cup in Detroit.
The Phantoms opened with a 6-2 loss to the Chicago Fury before tying the Chicago Young Americans, 2-2.
The Phantoms lost to Detroit Compuware, 7-3, then defeated the Indiana Ice, 2-1.
The Phantoms (7-3-1) will next face the St. Louis Blues U-18, the Columbus Blue Jackets U-18, and the Soo Indians, in Blaine, Minn., at the NAHL Midget Showcase Sept. 20-23.
Apple Fest Twin 25s
at Sharon Speedway
HARTFORD — The powerful 410 Sprints will take to the 3/8-mile oval at Sharon Speedway Saturday for the Apple Festival Twin 25s along with the completion of the BRP Modified Tour/Russ King Memorial that was rained out last Saturday.
Tickets are $11 for adults (16 and older), $5 for kids (12-15) and free for children 11 and younger. Pit passes are $22, and the pit gate opens at 3 p.m. Also, Pepsi patio suites are available for $5 above the regular ticket price.
Gates open at 4 p.m. and racing starts at 6 p.m.

at Mercer Raceway
MERCER, Pa. — Mercer Raceway Park will host the first USA-EAST Regional “Finals” Saturday, the season-ending point event for the USA-EAST pullers.
Grandstand gates will open at 4 p.m. Adult tickets are $13 and kids will get in for $5.
