Tour Championship
Atlanta
Schedule: Today-Sunday.
Course: East Lake Golf Club (7,154 yards, par 70).
Purse: $7 million. Winner’s share: $1.26 million.
FedEx Cup points: 50,000. Winner’s share: 10,300.
Television: Golf Channel (Today, 1-6 p.m., 8:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m.; Friday, 1-6 p.m., 9:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m.; Saturday, 12:30-2 p.m.; Sunday, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) and NBC (Saturday, 2-6 p.m.; Sunday, 2-6:30 p.m.)
Last year: Australia’s Adam Scott won the season-ending event, beating Jim Furyk by a stroke. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson skipped the tournament.
Last week: Woods won the BMW Championship to take the FedEx Cup lead, matching the lowest final round of his career with an 8-under 63 and shattering the Cog Hill record at 22-under 262. He won for the fourth time at Cog Hill to push his season victory total to six and career total to 60. Aaron Baddeley was second, two strokes back.
Notes: The top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings qualified for the playoff-ending tournament. Woods has a 3,133-point lead over Steve Stricker, The Barclays winner who finished third in the BMW Championship, and a 4,120-point advantage over Mickelson, the Deutsche Bank champion who skipped the BMW. Woods, Stricker, Mickelson, Rory Sabbatini, K.J. Choi and Baddeley are the only players with a mathematical chance of taking the $10 million deferred prize. If Baddeley wins the tournament, he would take the FedEx Cup if Woods withdraws or is disqualified, Mickelson finishes lower than a two-way tie for second, and Stricker finishes worse than third. ... Record heat over the last month caused so much damage to the greens that the tour canceled the pro-am and told players they wouldn’t be allowed on the greens until the first round. ... Woods is making his final official PGA Tour start of the year. He has 10 victories in his last 19 tour starts. ... East Lake, the course where Bobby Jones learned to play, is hosting the event for the seventh time. Built from 1906-08, East Lake was designed by Donald Ross and renovated by Rees Jones in 1995. ... The Turning Stone Resort Championship is next week in Verona, N.Y., followed by the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal.
