Council to weigh adding police at TMHA

WARREN — City council tonight will consider accepting a $75,000 contribution from the Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority for additional police protection.

Safety/Service Director Doug Franklin said the contract between the city and housing authority allows for flexible hours of officers to patrol properties owned or managed by the TMHA.

A concern of some council members was that more officers will be out during the day, rather than at night when more crime occurs.

Over the past 20 years or so, problems the housing authority has seen have dropped drastically, Mayor Mike O’Brien said. “We are nowhere near the problems we had years ago,” the mayor said.

Councilman Jim Pugh, D-6th, agrees. “I am very satisfied with the way things have gone,” he said.

Other items on the agenda include asking for passage of a resolution to support the revitalization and redevelopment of the downtown area, sponsored by Councilman Bob Holmes, D-4th. It involves submission of an application to the Heritage Ohio Main Street program to become an official Ohio Main Street community.

Another issue is a resolution to encourage a coordinated effort to eradicate the illegal use of fireworks in the city.
