Lakeview board pays $10,000 toward hiring officer

CORTLAND — The Lakeview School District’s board voted to approve a payment of $10,000 to the Cortland Police Department, its contribution toward a student resource officer for the school system.

Superintendent Robert Wilson said Monday that without the aid from the police department, the district would be paying about $60,000 a year for an officer.

This is the third year the district has had a full-time student resources officer, but it has had a part-time officer for the last 10 years, Wilson said.

The officer works in the district’s emergency plan, provides daily security and security for special events and other various functions.

Currently, the officer spends time at all four district buildings.

The board also entered into an agreement for vehicle insurance for the 2007-08 school year, paying Wollam Insurance Agency $13,184 for coverage. The cost of insuring the fleet is down from $15,086 paid last year.

Also, the board amended the policy on expulsion appeals. A student now has 14 calendar days from the date of expulsion to appeal. A student previously had 10 school days to file an appeal.
