D.C. United wins, 4-2
WASHINGTON — Luciano Emilio scored two second-half goals and D.C. United beat the New England Revolution 4-2 on Sunday to take a four-point lead in the Eastern Conference.
New England (12-6-6) went ahead 2-1 in the 54th minute when Shalrie Joseph’s shot trickled through United goalkeeper Troy Perkins’ legs, and Jay Heaps pushed the ball across the goal line for his first goal of the season.
But 5 minutes later, United (14-6-4), unbeaten in their last eight, seized control. Jaime Moreno took a short pass from Emilio, had his first shot blocked by Heaps but put the rebound past Matt Reis to tie the game.
D.C. struck again when Ben Olsen sent a pass across the box to Christian Gomez, and Emilio deflected Gomez’s shot into the goal in the 67th minute. Emilio added his second in the 83rd minute.
Chicago rookie Price
Hughes win awards
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Chicago Sky guard Armintie Price was named the WNBA rookie of the year, and Dan Hughes of the San Antonio Silver Stars was honored as the league’s top coach.
Price, who was drafted third overall out of Mississippi, started all 34 games and finished third among first-year players in scoring (7.9 points per game) and assists (2.9 a game).
Thanks in part to Price’s play, the Sky improved from five wins during its inaugural season in 2006 to 14 wins this year. Chicago was in the playoff picture until the final week of the regular season.
Price received 30 votes. Minnesota Lynx guard Lindsey Harding was runner-up with 12 votes.
The league’s best-of-five championship series between the Phoenix Mercury and the Detroit Shock is tied at a game apiece. Game 3 is Tuesday night in Phoenix.

Powell sets world
record in 100, 9.74
RIETI, Italy — Asafa Powell set another world record in the 100 meters, and suspects he can go even faster.
The world’s fastest man improved his record Sunday, winning a heat at the Rieti Grand Prix in 9.74 seconds despite easing at the end.
“This means that I can do even 9.68,” Powell said. “I’m worth that time, I know it.”
The record comes only two weeks after the Jamaican finished a disappointing third at the track and field world championships in Osaka, Japan.
“I made a couple of mistakes and I corrected them,” said Powell, who lowered the mark by 0.03 seconds, having run 9.77 three times. “That’s what happens when I start to listen to the coach.”
The heat, the second of two, was run with a strong tail wind, but it was below the maximum allowed by track and field’s governing body, making the record valid.
In the final, Powell won in 9.78 — with no tail wind. Michael Frater of Jamaica was second in 10.03, followed by Jaysuma Saidy Ndure of Norway in 10.10.
