Robert Emmons, director of Columbiana County’s effort to get enhanced 911 service, said that when finished, calls will be routed to one of five locations: The county sheriff’s office and Salem, Columbiana, East Palestine and East Liverpool. Each will receive calls from a specific area.

Now, four agencies handle basic 911 service that has been in effect in the county for about 10 years. They are the sheriff’s office and Columbiana, East Palestine and East Liverpool.

Calls are routed to one of the police agencies based on the local telephone exchange number in the community. There are about 10 exchange numbers in the county.

There may be some people who live outside a city whose basic 911 call would go to a city. Depending on the type of call, dispatchers would either handle it or pass it on to the appropriate agency.
