Franklin Co. tornado siren system broken

COLUMBUS (AP) — Franklin County officials say the tornado siren system has massive problems, and many neighborhoods will have faint or no warnings as thunderstorms approach.

Emergency Management Agency Director Gary Holland says about one-fourth of the entire system is broken.

Of 146 sirens, 37 are dead and another 15 are weak.

Officials aren’t sure what caused so many sirens to break, but speculate that the sirens might have blared too long without rests during an August tornado watch and many overheated.

Each siren can be heard across a mile-long radius, and are designed to overlap to increase coverage.

Officials say they’re working to fix the problem.
