BIG TEN ROUNDUP | Saturday’s other games
Minnesota 41, Miami (Ohio) 35, 3OT
MINNEAPOLIS — Amir Pinnix rushed for 126 yards and his 2-yard touchdown in the third overtime lifted Minnesota. Pinnix’s effort gave coach Tim Brewster his first win and helped the Gophers (1-1) avoid what would have been an embarrassing collapse. Minnesota led 28-12 with 8:35 to play after Adam Weber threw a 5-yard TD to Ernie Wheelwright. But backup quarterback Daniel Raudabaugh rallied Miami to 17 points in the final 6:35 of regulation, throwing for 202 yards and two touchdowns and driving the RedHawks 61 yards in less than two minutes to set up Trevor Cook’s game-tying field goal.
Northwestern 36, Nevada 31
EVANSTON, Ill. — C.J. Bacher threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to a diving Ross Lane with 21 seconds left to cap a frenzied six-play 80-yard drive as Northwestern rallied. Bacher set up the game-winning score with runs of 20 and 15 yards to the Nevada 13. He threw incomplete before firing the ball to Lane who went down for a scooping catch with Nevada’s Devon Walker on top of him. The play was reviewed and the call on the field upheld. Northwestern then tacked on two points on the final play when Kevin Mims sacked Nevada quarterback Nick Graziano in the end zone. It was a crushing loss for Nevada (0-2), which was coming off a 52-10 defeat at Nebraska a week ago.
Michigan State 28, Bowling Green 17
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Brian Hoyer completed 17 of 29 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns as Michigan State held off Bowling Green. The Spartans’ Devin Thomas had four catches for 156 yards and a fourth-quarter TD. Bowling Green (1-1), a Mid-American Conference team shooting for its second straight upset of a Big Ten opponent, faded in the second half against the more physical Spartans (2-0). Quarterback Tyler Sheehan completed 32 of 50 passes for 295 yards with a TD and ran for another score. Like Hoyer, he threw two interceptions. Michigan State grabbed a 21-14 lead early in the third quarter on a 5-yard TD plunge by Jehuu Caulcrick. Thomas made the key play in the drive, fighting off defender Kenny Lewis to haul in a 42-yard pass from Hoyer.
Bowling Green pulled to within 21-17 late in the third quarter on a 31-yard field goal by Sinisa Vrvilo.
Purdue 52, E. Illinois 6
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Curtis Painter tied a school record with six touchdown passes. Painter’s output tied the record set by Drew Brees in 1998 and matched by Kyle Orton in 2004. Painter completed 38-of-49 passes for 348 yards. Dorien Bryant caught 12 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown for the Boilermakers (2-0). Eastern Illinois quarterback Cole Stinson completed 15 of 32 passes for 143 yards. The Panthers (1-1) were ranked No. 14 in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) coaches poll.
