Four seniors named
basketball captains

YOUNGSTOWN — Women's basketball coach Tisha Hill announced that senior guards Lauren Branson, Heather Karner and Kira Mowen and senior forward Jessica Schloemp have been named team captains this season

"This is a great group of seasoned players," Hill said. "It thrills me to know that the leadership is in place with these four players."

Branson, a three-year starter at point guard, ranks seventh all-time with 326 career assists and needs 51 more to move into sixth place. Branson also needs just 74 more to become the sixth player in school history to record at least 400 assists.

Karner was named to the 2007 Horizon League All-Newcomer Team after leading the Penguins in scoring with 10.9 points per game. She also connected on a team-best 52 3-pointers last season, which is tied for 10th on the YSU single-season 3-point list.

Schloemp has appeared in 73 consecutive games and has played in 83 of a possible 84 career games.

Baddeley, Byrd
share tourney lead

LEMONT, Ill. — Aaron Baddeley and Jonathan Byrd were well on their way to the top of the leaderboard Friday at the BMW Championship when Tiger Woods figured he better get going if he didn’t want to be left behind.

That’s about the time he started losing his swing and finding his putter, which wasn’t a bad combination at Cog Hill. Baddeley returned from a three-hour rain delay by making three straight birdies and finished strong for a 6-under 65, giving him a share of the lead with Byrd (69) going into the weekend of the third tournament in these PGA Tour Playoffs.

But it was difficult to ignore Woods, whose second straight 67 put him one shot behind along with Barclays winner Steve Stricker (66), Justin Rose (69) and Camilo Villegas (69).

•NW Arkansas Championship

ROGERS, Ark. — Rookie Kristy McPherson shot a 6-under 66 to share the early clubhouse lead Friday at the rain-soaked LPGA NW Arkansas Championship.

McPherson, Teresa Lu and Katherine Hull were all a stroke ahead of Sherri Turner. Those four were among the few who finished the first round by the early evening. Heavy rain fell during the morning at Pinnacle Country Club.

U.S. Women’s Open champion Cristie Kerr was in contention after a 69, but several of the tournament’s top draws started so late they had little hope of finishing. Natalie Gulbis started around 4:40 p.m.
