Rockets’ Whinery goes for 138
Lowellville picked up its first win of the season, over
Springfield.
NEW MIDDLETOWN — Cody Whinery rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown Friday to lead the Lowellville High football team to a 28-20 victory over Springfield.
John Lyras (1 yard) and Vince Travaline (2 yards) scored first-half touchdown to boost the Rockets (1-2) to a 12-0 lead. Travaline finished with 73 yards on 21 carries.
David Minnie completed five of nine passes for 119 yards including a 14-yard touchdown to Bill Sacaccetti.
For the Tigers (0-3), quarterback Nate Schuler completed 14 of 22 passes for 176 yards. Brandon Goist caught seven for 143 yards and two touchdowns (12 and 32 yards). Schuler hit Matt Evans with a 5-yard score for Springfield’s other score.

NORTH JACKSON — Tommy Powers and Aaron Householder each scored touchdowns for the Bulldogs.
Powers intercepted a pass and returned it 77 yards for a score. Householder rushed 10 times for 74 yards, including scores from the 4 and 2.
Jake Carlile led the Blue Jays (0-3) with 90 yards rushing and a 75-yard kickoff return.

COLUMBIANA — Corey Hill’s 84-yard return of the opening kickoff got the Rebels rolling. Hill also scored on a 74 yard run.
Tony Britton scored Crestview’s other touchdowns on runs of 8 and 1 yard.

WELLSVILLE — After Jeremy Carter’s 77-yard return of the opening kickoff staked the Tigers to a quick lead, the Blue Devils (2-1) pitched a shutout.
Aaron Sweeney’s 20-yard interception return tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter.
Dana Rose’s 73-yard return of the second-half kickoff ended the scoring. Rose led the Devils with 64 yards rushing on 18 carries.
Jeff Hanselman led the Tigers with 89 yards rushing on 28 carries.

TORONTO — Eric Sluss rushed twice for touchdowns and Jimmy Phillis scored once and passed for 76 yards for United (2-1).
