Food bank urges public to donate items for needy
YOUNGSTOWN — Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley is inviting people to drive by or drop in and bring nonperishable food to its warehouse at 2805 Salt Springs Road between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday to help fill a new delivery truck used to transport food to area food banks and pantries.
Michael Iberis, executive director, urged residents to participate in the celebration of receiving the new $80,000 truck, a gift from ConAgra Foods, by bringing food items such as canned vegetables and meats, cereal and peanut butter.
Those participating also can take part in a picnic provided by Valley Foods and Coca Cola.
Also, there will be barrels in the parking lot into which people can deposit food items.
As part of the event, U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, is scheduled to speak at 10 a.m., Iberis said.
