Battles’ balance helps East beat John Adams


Southington nearly got its first win of the season against Windham.

AUSTINTOWN — Sal Battles threw for 68 yards and ran for 97 more on eight carries, including a 52-yard touchdown run, to lead the East High football team to its second straight victory, 29-0 over Cleveland John Adams at Fitch High.

Battles completed 6 of 13 passes for the Panthers (2-1), who will play home games at four sites this year. Running back Gary Thornton added 36 yards on 11 carries and Anthony Robinson had 86 yards on 10 carries, including a touchdown.

The Panthers gained 283 yards on the ground.

Jawan Rutledge completed 5 of 19 for 49 yards and three interceptions for John Adams (0-3), which had just 94 total yards.

Rutledge rushed for 18 yards and Anthony Shepherd added 39 yards on 15 carries.

Windham 13,
Southington 12

WINDHAM — Jimmy Rasey scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns for Southington, but the Wildcats failed on a two-point conversion attempt with three minutes left.

Rasey carried 20 times for 129 yards for Southington (0-3), which was hurt by six turnovers.

Kyle Cooper threw for 178 yards and a touchdown to lead Windham, which took a 13-0 lead early in the fourth.

Southeast 20

RAVENNA — After Southeast (1-2) took an early 7-0 lead, Minerva bounced back and led 14-13 at halftime and the Pirates coundn’t catch up again.

Chad Eatinger rushed for 123 yards on 18 carries and he scored on runs of 24 and 4 yards to spark the Pirates.

The Lions ground out 388 yards on 46 attempts, compared to 189 on 28 tries for the Pirates.
