Recycling revenue to help school band

COLUMBIANA — Michael Fay, the Crestview School District’s band director, and Josh Hawkins, the middle school music teacher, are taking over recycling at Crestview.

The money earned will help the band with its expenses.

The next recycling date will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 27 at the school.

Crestview biology teacher Kathy Cattrell has run the program for 13 years but is stepping down.

“Thank you very much for your support and for caring about the environment enough to make the effort to recycle,” she said in a statement. “Together we have made a difference.”

She and her students have recycled more than 1,200 tons of paper products and more than 5 tons of aluminum.

The money from the paper recycling has purchased stuffed animals and paid for field trips and equipment. The money from aluminum cans has helped fund the district’s ski club trips.

Materials should be separated by type. Computers, monitors, keyboards and printers can also be recycled. People can take items to the high school during the collection times, or to GO Computer Center, Salem, on state Route 45 (south side of the Salem bypass).
