Colla paces Ursuline to 3-0 win


He made two penalty-kick goals against Ashtabula Edgewood.

YOUNGSTOWN — Senior John Colla scored two penalty-kick goals Thursday as the Ursuline High boys soccer team blanked Ashtabula Edgewood, 3-0.

Junior Kevin Patrick netted the other goal for Ursuline (3-1-3) at Wick Recreation Area.

Chris Nerad had six saves for Edgewood.

JVs: Ursuline 2, Edgewood 0.

OAKGLEN, W. Va. — The Rebels (4-1-1) scored two goals in the first half and three in the second.

Greg Bing scored two goals for the Rebels, while Brian Bechtel, Austin Elwonger and Mitchell See scored one apiece.

Nicholas Magill, Elwonger and See each had an assist.

EAST LIVERPOOL — Kyle Knepper scored three goals for the Lions (6-1. Seth Grubaugh added two, while Treg Lunger, Justin Storm and Jonathan King each had one.

Lunger had two assists, while Storm had one.

Justin White scored two goals and Dillon Light ha one East Liverpool.

The Lions had 26 shots on goal and the Warriors 18. Goalkeeper Aaron Shields had 13 saves for Youngstown Christian. Grubaughh had 26 stops.

Wednesday

Mathews 3, LaBrae 2

LEAVITTSBURG — Freshman Kevin Moyer scored the game-winning goal for Mathews (2-0) as the Vikings slipped to 0-4-1.

A direct kick from 25 yards out to the far post by senior Jake Klinger put Mathews on the scoreboard first.

LaBrae answered with an unassisted shot by Mike Pratt that caromed off a Mathews defender past the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Nate Bohach.

The tie was broken before the half ended when freshman Mike Ponikvar took a pass from classmate Ethan Fiest and scored a goal for the Mustangs.

Pratt scored the other goal for LaBrae.
