seeks nominations

YOUNGSTOWN — The East High School all-sports hall of fame committee is seeking nominations for its 2008 induction class.

Mooney football
tickets on sale

YOUNGSTOWN — Tickets for the Cardinal Mooney High football game at Akron Hoban Friday night will be on sale at the Mooney school office today and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $6 for adults and $4 for students, while all tickets at the gate are $6.

Boardman, Mooney
look to repeat

EAST PALESTINE — Boardman High School will defend its boys title and Mooney its girls crown when 16 schools compete in the East Palestine Rotary Cross Country Invitational Saturday at East Palestine City Park.

Some of the area’s outstanding distance runner entered in the boys run are Boardman’s Sam Deskin, Struthers’ Robert Zanni, Mooney’s Nevin Lesnoski, Niles’ Hunter Heinselman, Girard’s Rocky DeFrank and Ravenna’s Robert Truax.

Lauren Agnew of Boardman returns to defend the title in the girls run. She set a meet and course record (19 minutes, 50 seconds) last year.

A strong field of Christina Oles and Kaitlyn Moss of Mooney, Stephanie Case of Columbiana, sisters Elizabeth and Leighann Kelvington and Samantha Kennedy of East Palestine, Samantha Plajer of Waterloo and Jocelynn Steiner of Ravenna will contend.

HARTFORD — The annual visit of the BRP Modified Tour. plus Pure Stocks, Limited Sprints and E-mods are on the racing card at Sharon Speedway Saturday.

The BRP Modified Tour drivers will compete in Sharon's annual Russ King Memorial.

This is the final event on the BRP Modified Tour schedule .

Zach Foster honored

WEXFORD, Pa. — Bethany College sophomore Zach Foster was selected as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.

Foster was the top PAC runner to finish at Saturday’s Westminster (Pa.) College Invitational, as he took fifth place overall with a time of 28:37.4.

Bodden arrested at
Cleveland airport

CLEVELAND — Browns cornerback Leigh Bodden was arrested Wednesday after driving a sport utility vehicle backward and the wrong way outside Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and refusing to comply with police orders, authorities said.

Bodden, 25, refused to stop the vehicle when initially approached by an officer, said Cleveland police Lt. Thomas Stacho. Bodden eventually pulled the vehicle to a curb, got out and walked toward an airport entrance, Stacho said.

“He (Bodden) indicated he was there to pick up his people, whoever his people are,” Stacho said.

Bodden became verbally abusive with the officer, who called for police backup, Stacho said. Responding officers instructed Bodden to place his hands on a wall, which he did, but the situation became tense when the football player began to resist officers trying to place handcuffs on him, Stacho said.

Bodden later complied with police and was taken to a city jail, where he remained Wednesday night. He was being booked on aggravated disorderly conducted and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors, and traffic offenses of failing to produce a driver’s license and driving the wrong way on a one-way street, Stacho said.

Shock beat Mercury
in WNBA finals

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Plenette Pierson and Kara Braxton combined for 45 points and 22 rebounds to lead the defending champion Detroit Shock to a 108-100 win Wednesday night over the Phoenix Mercury in Game 1 of the WNBA finals.

Detroit took the lead in the best-of-five series despite the absence of All-Star Cheryl Ford, who sat out with a knee injury. It was the highest-scoring game in the history of the finals.

Four other players scored in double figures for the Shock, who were able to push around the Mercury, who swept their previous two best-of-three playoff series.
