Last week: Phil Mickelson won the Deutsche Bank Championship to take the FedEx Cup points lead, beating Woods, Arron Oberholser and Brett Wetterich by two strokes. Mickelson closed with a 5-under 66 at TPC Boston, pulling away from Woods on the front nine and holding him off down the stretch Monday for his third victory of the year. Woods, paired with Mickelson, finished with a 67.
Notes: The top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings qualified for the tournament. The playoff field will be cut to 30 for the Tour Championship next week at East Lake in Atlanta. The FedEx Cup winner will get a $10 million deferred prize. ... Woods, third in the playoff standings, won at Cog Hill in 1997, 1999 and 2003. ... Steve Stricker, The Barclays winner two weeks ago in the playoff opener, won the 1996 tournament at Cog Hill. He’s second in the standings. ... Jim Furyk won in 2005, holding off Woods by two strokes. ... The tournament, previously the Western Open, also will be played at Cog Hill in 2009 and 2011. The 2008 event is set for Bellerive in St. Louis and the 2010 tournament will be played at Crooked Stick outside Indianapolis.
