Charged with assault
YOUNGSTOWN — A 28-year-old Stewart Avenue man was shot by police in the 1400 block of Ohio Avenue, after he attempted to run down a Mahoning County Violent Crime Task Force member at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Shot was Sean A. Bishop, who is charged with felonious assault. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment. A hospital spokeswoman said no information on Bishop’s condition was being given out Tuesday night.
According to the Youngstown Police Department, a city police cruiser responded to an investigation on Ohio when Bishop tried to hit a task force agent with his car. That’s when Bishop was shot, police said.
Explosives found
CORTLAND — A portion of Bradley-Brownlee Road in Johnston Township was closed Tuesday afternoon while members of the Youngstown Bomb Squad secured several sticks of military grade explosives found by a woman in her garage.
The explosives were detonated by the bomb squad in a field off Ridge Road just north of Irishtown-Southworth Road, according to the Trumbull County 911 Center. The explosives were reported found about 2:05 p.m. Schools with bus runs in the area were notified that the road was closed, and people in the area were told to turn off their cell phones.
Park roads closed
YOUNGSTOWN — The following drives in Mill Creek park will be closed from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday for the Community Cup: New Bears Den Drive, Bears Den Drive, West Glacier Drive, Cross Drive and West Park Drive. All parking for the Community Cup will be at Wick Recreation Area at Belle Vista Avenue and McCollum Road.
OVI checkpoint planned
A sobriety checkpoint will be held from 10 p.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday in Mahoning County. The Mahoning County Operating Vehicle Impaired Task Force will target impaired drivers in an effort to reduce alcohol- and drug-related crashes.
Texas Hold’em course
CHAMPION — The Trumbull Career and Technical Center Adult Training Center is offering a No Limit Texas Hold’em Poker course designed for the person with little or no experience with the game. Basic rules, strategies and tells will be taught. Classroom instruction will be followed by practice games with professional cards and chips. Mosquito spraying
HOWLAND — The township will spray for mosquitoes from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday and Tuesday. In case of rain, spraying will be done the following evenings. Residents are encouraged to close their windows, keep pets indoors and not leave any food outdoors during spraying.
Seeking donations
SALEM — The Salem Fire Department is asking for donations to help fund its fire safety and burn prevention program for children. The Firepup Program costs $3,285 and helps to protect and educate 1,811 children, fire officials said . Tax-deductible checks should be made payable to the National Fire Safety Council Inc. and mailed to Fire Chief Walt Greenamyer at the department, 260 S. Ellsworth Ave.

FOWLER — The Trumbull Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force will operate an OVI checkpoint in Fowler Township to deter and intercept impaired drivers Saturday.
Adult store robbed
YOUNGSTOWN — A clerk who used a buzzer to let a would-be customer in the door at the Adult Toy and Gift store on Market Street told police the man walked behind the counter Monday evening, demanded and then grabbed cash from the register. The robber, who implied he had a weapon in his jacket, fled in an unknown direction just before 9 p.m.
Garage fire in Boardman
BOARDMAN — A garage fire did $13,000 damage on Orlo Avenue about 7:45 a.m. Monday. The fire was put out in about an hour. The home to which the garage was attached was not damaged.
New site for Red Cross
SHARPSVILLE, Pa. — The American Red Cross of Mercer County is now at 517 W. Main St. The office had been previously located on South Oakland Avenue in Sharon. Today will be the first day of operation in the new location.
