CANFIELD — Saturday attendance at the fair was the highest-ever Saturday attendance in the fair’s history. Timm Schreiber, fair board member and director of ticket and gate admissions, said Saturday’s attendance was 80,455, compared to last year’s 29,504. Saturday’s attendance brought the four-day total to 197,331. Over the first four days of the six-day fair, 45,036 more visitors passed through the gates than did last year.

Honored for 50 years
in harness racing division

CANFIELD — Betty Stacy-Vernon was honored Sunday for 50 years of service in the harness racing division of the fair. For 25 years she worked as an outrider and now checks numbers and saddle pads at the gate.

Army recruitment

CANFIELD — Sgt. Robert Day, an Ohio Army National Guard recruiter, and John P. Brown III, a national commander for AMVETS, presented Fair Board President Kathryn Bennett with awards for helping Day meet recruitment numbers by recruiting at the fair.

Little leaguers honored

CANFIELD — The Boardman Junior Little League softball team, which is ranked fifth in the world, was honored at the Canfield Fair Board meeting Sunday. Team members received fair pins.

Flag-retiring ceremony

CANFIELD — Boy Scout Troop 80 from North Lima retired 10 American flags in a Scout ceremony on the fairgrounds. The Scouts shredded the flags and separated the colors, which are burned separately. Ron Keshock, troop chaplain, said the flags were donated throughout the year, and the troop holds the flag burning a few times each year. There are nine Scouts in the North Lima troop who participated in Sunday’s ceremony.
