Red Sox 3, Orioles 2

BOSTON — One day after 23-year-old right-hander Clay Buchholz pitched a no-hitter in his second major league game, Jacoby Ellsbury hit his first career homer and Dustin Pedroia made an outstanding defensive play for Boston. Second-year pitcher Jon Lester threw six innings and Hideki Okajima, a major league rookie after 12 seasons in Japan, escaped a one-out jam with the tying run at third in the eighth by striking out Kevin Millar and Aubrey Huff. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his 31st save in 33 chances.

Athletics 8, Tigers 7, 10 innings

OAKLAND, Calif. — Oakland’s Jack Hannahan blooped a game-winning single to shallow left in the 10th inning to score Mark Ellis from first. Huston Street (3-2) pitched a perfect 10th with two strikeouts for the win in the A’s fourth extra-inning contest in their last six games. Kurt Suzuki hit a tying, two-run homer in the ninth off Todd Jones.

Devil Rays 8, Yankees 2

NEW YORK — Carlos Pena hit a three-run homer to tie Tampa Bay’s single-season record and the Devil Rays beat Andy Pettitte for only the second time in 20 career starts. Tampa Bay won a series at Yankee Stadium for the first time since 2005 and only its fourth series win in 27 trips to the Bronx. Bobby Abreu went 2-for-5 with an RBI for the Yankees.

Blue Jays 6, Mariners 4

TORONTO — Matt Stairs and Gregg Zaun each hit two-run homers, A.J. Burnett pitched seven innings and Toronto sent Seattle to its season-high ninth consecutive loss. Burnett (8-7) retired the first ten batters in order and struck out five of the first six. He allowed three runs and four hits, walked one and struck out seven to win for the first time in three starts.

Royals 8, Twins 1

MINNEAPOLIS — Alex Gordon hit two home runs and Kansas City’s Brian Bannister won for the fourth straight time. John Buck had three hits, including his 17th home run, and Shane Costa added three more for the Royals, who tied their season high with 16 hits.

Rangers, 8 Angels 7

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Hank Blalock returned to the Texas lineup with a bang, hitting a dramatic go-ahead grand slam against Scot Shields in the eighth inning. Shields (3-5) gave up a leadoff single to Michael Young, then walked Brad Wilkerson and hit Frank Catalanotto with a 2-2 pitch before Blalock drove the right-hander’s 2-2 delivery deep into the right-field seats for his fifth career grand slam and first this season.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Mets 3, Braves 2

ATLANTA — Backed by David Wright’s two-run homer, Tom Glavine won for the first time in four tries this season against his longtime teammate John Smoltz. Glavine (12-6) gave up five hits and one run in six innings, with three walks and two strikeouts. Smoltz (12-7) was 3-0 in the rivalry before giving up nine hits and three runs in seven innings. He walked two batters and struck out four.

Dodgers 5, Padres 0

SAN DIEGO — Chad Billingsley shut down San Diego with seven innings of four-hit ball, beating the Padres for the third time this season. Billingsley (10-4) matched his career-high with nine strikeouts against only one walk and allowing only one baserunner as far as second base.

Rockies 4, Diamondbacks 3

PHOENIX — Matt Holliday singled, homered and drove in two runs and Colorado beat Arizona and Brandon Webb.

Josh Fogg (8-9) pitched six solid innings for the Rockies, who won for the third time in four games to pull within five games of San Diego and Arizona.

Webb (14-10) struggled for the second straight start for the Diamondbacks, allowing four runs and five hits over seven innings. The defending Cy Young Award winner struck out seven, walked two and trailed 1-0 before retiring a batter. Webb had a streak of 42 consecutive scoreless innings snapped on Aug. 22

Tony Clark was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple for the Diamondbacks, who have lost five of its last seven and nine of 14.

Marlins 7, Phillies 6

MIAMI — Florida tied a team record with five home runs, including two by Cody Ross and a go-ahead homer by Hanley Ramirez. The score was 5-all before Ramirez and Dan Uggla hit back-to-back homers off Kane Davis (0-1) to start the seventh.

Cubs 6, Astros 5

CHICAGO — Derrek Lee drove in three runs, including a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning, for Chicago. Trailing 5-4, Alfonso Soriano singled off Astros reliever Chad Qualls (6-4) and with two outs, Lee homered on an 0-1 pitch to left-center field to cap a four-run comeback by the Cubs.

Cardinals 3, Reds 2

ST. LOUIS — Rick Ankiel homered for the second time in three days to snap a sixth-inning tie for St. Louis, capping a huge weekend series by the former pitcher. Ankiel went 6-for-12 in the series with two homers and nine RBIs.

Nationals 2, Giants 1

WASHINGTON — Ryan Zimmerman hit a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning as Washington took two out of three from San Francisco. Chad Cordero (3-3) pitched the ninth inning for the victory, surviving a two-out, cue-shot double down the right field line by Rich Aurilla.
