Family rescued from Salem fire
SALEM — Firefighters rescued a mother, her four children and a grandchild from their burning home at 298 Jennings Ave. on Sunday morning.
Michelle Joy and four of the children were treated for smoke inhalation at Salem Community Hospital. A 5-year-old girl, not named by firefighters, was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital.
Members of the family were sleeping in basement and second-floor bedrooms when the blaze began.
The cause of the fire, reported by an occupant at 4:50 a.m., is unknown. It ignited in the living room of the two-story, wood frame home.
Firefighters estimated the damage to the house at between $45,000 and $50,000, and to its contents, $30,000.
