HONORS

Qualified in T-45C

Marine Corps 1st Lt. Daniel S. Vanes carrier qualified in the T-45C on board the USS Eisenhower on Aug. 19, 2007. He also recently completed total strike training in Meridian, Miss., where he earned awards for bombing accuracy. He was also named to the Commodore’s List during primary flight training. He has been assigned to train in the AV-8B Harrier II and his unit will be based in Yuma, Ariz.

Vanes, the son of Joy and Robert Vanes of Girard, is a 1999 graduate of Ursuline High School and a 2003 graduate of Miami University of Ohio. His wife is the former Mindy Flickinger of Cortland.

VETERANS

Meeting date changed

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission’s September meeting has been changed from Sept. 12 to Sept. 13 at 9 a.m. The commission meets at the Mahoning County Annex Office Building, 2801 Market St.

WAVES Unit 21 to meet

KENT — The North Coast WAVES Unit 21 of WAVES National will meet at 11 a.m. Saturday at Otto’s Restaurant, 4112 Brimfield Plaza at I-76 and state Route 43. Call (330) 757-7827 for a reservation.

Achieved new rank

Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Randi L. Richards was promoted to her current rank while serving with the 15th Personnel Service Battalion, for which she was also named Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter. Richards, a human resource specialist, is the daughter of Raymond P. Dunn and Pamela J. Dunn, both of Transfer, Pa. Her husband, Brian, is the son of Bill and Becky Richards of Norton. In 2000, Richards graduated from Reynolds Junior Senior High School, Transfer, Pa.

Air Force: Airman 1st Class Richard T. Toy (honor graduate), (South Range High School, North Lima, ’00), son of George Toy of Canfield; National Guard Airman 1st Class Sara M. Bressler (South Side High School, Hookstown, Pa., ’03; Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Edinboro, Pa., ’07), daughter of Edward and Linda Bressler of New Castle, Pa.; Airman 1st Class RickeyJ. Harris (Reynoldsburg High School, Ohio, ’05), son of Mary Brown of Groveport, Ohio, and grandson of Constance Thurman of Youngstown.

Navy: Seaman Apprentice Gary R. Baumbeck (East Palestine High School, ’07), son of Michele A. Fitzmaurice and Lonnie E. Bell, both of East Palestine.
