Corner-kick goal by Koch lifts Fitch girls over SV-SM

AKRON — Freshman forward Tori Koch scored on a corner kick at 34:20 in the first half Saturday as the Fitch High girls soccer team defeated Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 1-0.

Fitch goalkeeper Ali Tolich made two saves for the Falcons (4-0-1), while Amanda Chadtsky made eight stops for the Irish (1-2-0).

Fitch’s previous victories were over West Branch, Alliance and Canton McKinley, while its tie was against Howland, 2-2.

Boardman 3, Hubbard 1

BOARDMAN — Junior midfielder Jamie Avona had two goals, while freshman forward Heather Hughes had another for Boardman (3-0).

Junior midfielder Courtney Gratz had the assist on Hughes’ goal, while senior midfielder Jessica Winters assisted on Avona’s first goal.

The score was 1-1 at halftime. Avona’s Winters-assisted goal came late in the game.

Boardman’s sophomore goalkeeper, Cheyenne Khatib, made two saves.

Mooney 6, Bay 2

BAY VILLAGE — Ashley Cuba had three goals and one assist and Katie Griswald two goals and one assist to lead Cardinal Mooney past Bay High.

Alex Sierra added one goal and Dina Pelly had an assist to bolster the Cards (2-1), who led 4-0 at the half.

Mooney goalie Meagan McGlaughlin made six saves.

For Bay, Megan Griffiths and Sarah Hoffman each scored a goal and Jamie Greene had an assist.

In 2005, Mooney lost to Bay in a regional semifinal.

JVs: Bay won, 7-0.

Badger 3, Jefferson 2

KINSMAN — Amelia Deraway had two goals and Shawna McNeely added one for Badger, which led 2-1 at the half.

For Jefferson, Megan Gochneaur and Callie Busch had a goal apiece.

Taylor Phillips, Jenna Miller and McNeely each had an assist for the Braves.

Badger goalkeeper Katie Dvorack had 10 saves in the first half, followed by an eight-save second half by backup Kelsey Flowers.

Jefferson keeper Emily Fuller registered 17 stops.

Boys
Howland 1, Lakeview 1

CORTLAND — After a scoreless first half, Lakeview’s Joel Davis scored with 30:50 remaining and Howland’s Joseph Prezioso tied the game on an assist from Eric Albani at 11:05.

Lakeview goalkeeper Greg Pecorelli had 16 saves, while Howland’s Dan Miller had eight stops. Lakeview is 3-0-1, Howland 0-0-4.

JVs: Lakeview 2, Howland 1.

Mooney 3, Bay 2

BAY VILLAGE — Joe Merlo had two goals and Matt McWilson had one goal and one assist to lead Cardinal Mooney (3-0), which took a 2-0 lead.

Tommy McBride and Timothy Beck each added an assist while goalie Jon Critell had nine saves for the Cardinals.

Bobby Olson and Aaron Atkins each had a goal for Bay Village (1-2), while Tyler Barnett had an assist and goalie Nathan McDonald five saves.

Badger 3, Champion 2

KINSMAN — Brock Elsea, Shawn Brainard and Lee Matson each scored to give the Braves (2-0-1) a 3-0 lead at the break.

David Palm and Josh Rable connected for the Golden Flashes (2-2).
