YSU/OSU Live | The game is a family affair

COLUMBUS — It’s a sea of red outside Ohio Stadium as thousands of fans enjoy themselves before the Ohio State-Youngstown State football game.

There are numerous Penguin fans tailgating alongside the hometown Buckeye fans at several locations around the stadium.

The traffic up Interstate 71 to Columbus was relatively quiet early this morning. Many of the cars were filled with Penguins fans proudly wearing team jerseys and shirts.

The Bartelmays — from Michigan, Georgia as well as Canfield and Hermitage, Pa. — came to today’s game for a family reunion.

Merton J. Bartelmay of Canfield, the family’s patriarch and a 1950 graduate of then-Youngstown College, was thrilled to have his family together for the game.

Some of the family members are YSU fans and others are OSU fans.

“It’s a historic game for YSU,” Bartelmay said. “I’m excited about the game and I’m excited to have my family here.”
