YOUNGSTOWN — A .22-caliber revolver was found Thursday evening under the passenger seat of a Buick traveling on Oak Hill Avenue without its headlights on, police said. The passenger, a 16-year-old Laclede Avenue boy, was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center to face a charge of carrying a concealed weapon. The 17-year-old driver, a Volney Road boy, was cited for driving with an expired temporary permit and failure to display headlights and released to his mother. The Buick, which had a 30-day tag on it, was towed and held for a traffic investigator because two expired 30-day tags were found in the trunk.
Sentenced for drugs
FARRELL, Pa. — A Warren, Ohio, man accused of murder has been sentenced to 13 days in the Mercer County Jail on charges here. Steven Brown, 29, was sentenced Friday before District Magistrate Ronald Antos after pleading guilty to possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Brown is accused in the Aug. 23 shooting death of Johnny Williamson, 24, in Williamson’s North Park Avenue apartment in Warren. Brown was arrested at a Hermitage, Pa., motel the day after the shooting, and local charges were filed against him. It’s not known if he will waive extradition to Trumbull County on the murder charge.
Recorder’s new Web site
LISBON — Columbiana County Recorder Craig Brown announced that his office has a new Web site. The new site continues aspects of the old site, including a searchable database and office contact information. The site includes downloadable forms, including military discharge papers, living wills and related paperwork, and a request to have Social Security numbers masked or blacked out on copies that will be viewed to the public. Black Monday anniversary
YOUNGSTOWN — A lecture⁄panel discussion moderated by Dr. Sherry Linkon, a Youngstown State University professor, will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor (steel museum), 151 W. Wood St. Sept. 19 is the 30th anniversary of Black Monday, when the shutdown of Youngstown Sheet & Tube was announced. The Young Leaders Advisory Board, part of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, is hosting the event in partnership with YSU, Catholic Diocese of Youngstown and the steel museum.
Magazine sales warning
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The New Castle School of Trades says a man is improperly claiming he is selling magazine subscriptions and is affiliated with the school. People he approaches are asked to contact the police department at (724) 964-8891, ext. 104. In a release, school officials said the man was white, in his early 20s, with short, light-brown hair. He is about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds. The man is nicely dressed.
Fire damages bedrooms
NILES — Fire officials are attempting to find the cause of a Friday morning blaze that heavily damaged two bedrooms at the home of Joe Migliozzi, 712 N. Main St. There were no injuries. Fire Lt. Mike Fontforte said flames broke out in a second-floor bedroom of the 21⁄2-story frame structure and spread to a second bedroom. When firefighters arrived, Migliozzi was standing on the front porch. There is no estimate of damage.
Attendance officer hired
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The city school board has created a position for an attendance officer and named an area minister to the post. The New Castle school board hired the Rev. Torrance L. Respress Sr. during a special session last week. Respress, who heads the House of Prayer Ministries in the city, is to be paid $26,500 with no benefits for the 185-day school term. He is married to Dr. Jacqueline Respress, the new principal at the junior⁄senior high school. The administration originally proposed hiring an attendance officer during its January budget session for the 2007-08 school year. Classes began in the district Wednesday.
3 teens report robbery
BOARDMAN — Three teens told police they were robbed by three others as the walked along Shields Road. The boys, two 16 and one 17, told police they were walking about 8 p.m. Thursday on the road by Lemans Drive when they saw three other young men approach them on bicycles. One of the suspects tripped one of the boys, pushed him to the ground and went through his pockets, removing a $20 bill. The other two suspects, also described as teenagers, went through the pockets of the other two boys, but they didn’t have any money. The three bicyclists then left the area, headed east on Shields.
Garbage pickup delayed
WARREN — The city’s Environmental Services Department will be closed Monday in observation of Labor Day. Garbage pickup will be delayed by one day the entire week.
