Nonteaching workers get raises in 2 years of pact

BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield Local Board of Education had some good news Friday.

The board had a brief meeting where it voted to approve a new three-year contract with nonteaching workers.

New Superintendent Steven Stohla said the contract affects 17 full-time district workers and 24 bus drivers.

The workers had taken a wage reduction last year and will continue at that rate for the school year that began July 1.

Workers will get a 1 percent raise in the school year beginning July 1, 2008, and a 2 percent raise in the year beginning July 1, 2009.

The new contract also includes new insurance co-pays and deductibles.

No figures were immediately available on the cost to the district of the pay raises or estimated savings. The superintendent said he wanted to compile information on the financial effects of the contract before releasing it.

The superintendent said he appreciated the workers’ cooperating with the board, which has a tight budget.

“For this, we thank you,” Stohla said.

The district is continuing talks with its teachers, the superintendent added.
