YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Campus of National College, 3481 Belmont Ave., begins its fall term Tuesday. Day and evening classes are offered for the 11-week term.

UA emergency texting
AKRON — The University of Akron has established a text-messaging service to notify participants in case of an emergency. Both students and parents may sign up for the alerts.
A text message outlining the nature of the emergency will be sent to the mobile/cell phone and/or e-mail address provided by the students and parents. The service is free from the university but recipients will pay text-messaging fees charged by providers.
TCTC auto service exams
CHAMPION — The adult education department at Trumbull Career & Technical Center announced that the July 2007 graduates of the automotive service technician training program have combined to pass 27 Automotive Service Excellence tests.
Leading the class by passing all six tests was William Breese of Warren. Randy Rodgers of Austintown passed five exams and Mike Paparodis of Poland and Jerry Scott of Mineral Ridge each passed four.
PSU Shenango librarian
SHARON, Pa. — Matthew Ciszek of the Pittsburgh area was hired as the new head librarian at Penn State Shenango. He will be in charge of the overall library administration and services and supervision of staff.
He holds a master’s degree in library science and a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
He previously was the access services librarian at Georgetown University Law Library in Washington, D.C., and was librarian at the University of the District of Columbia, Golden Gate University and Innovative Interfaces Inc.
Interact Club project
AUSTINTOWN — The Interact Club at Austintown Fitch High School is continuing its ongoing project of recycling scrap paper. In cooperation with the Green Team, club members make weekly visits to classrooms and offices to gather paper and place in special recycling bins.
The club, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Austintown, also is involved in other projects including roadside cleanup, Rescue Mission and Second Harvest Food Bank. Advisers are Della McPherson and Gary Reel.
Italian classes
WARREN — The Warren Italian American Festival Committee Inc. announced Italian classes are being held at three locations starting this month. Sessions will be Mondays, Sept. 10-Dec. 10, at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman, and Wednesdays, Sept. 12-Dec. 12, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 343 Via Mount Carmel, Youngstown, and Blessed Sacrament Church, 3029 Reeves St. N.E. All sessions will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
MU volunteer training
ALLIANCE —The John T. Huston-Dr. John D. Brumbaugh Nature Center of Mount Union College will have volunteer training sessions Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
After completing initial training, the programs offered to educators will be discussed. Participants will learn what is covered in each program and gain suggestions for activities that will complement the theme of each program.
Participants will then have the opportunity to sign up to observe some of the outdoor trail programs. The center staff asks that volunteers observe at least two programs or more, led by trained guides and then lead one with a trained guide to help the volunteer. The volunteer will then be able to lead his or her own group.
This workshop is open to high school-aged students through adults and lunch is provided. Registration is required. The nature center is six miles south of Mount Union College on Daniel Street, just off state Route 183.
