GROVE CITY, Pa. — Sophomore midfielder Elise Bender assisted on one goal and added the eventual game-winner Friday afternoon as Grove City opened the 2007 season with a win. Grove City (1-0) grabbed a 1-0 lead just 4:10 into the match as junior Stephanie Wild scored off a Bender corner kick. Adrian tied the match seven minutes later on a penalty kick from Lindsay Chitwood. Grove City reclaimed the lead for good at 38:55 on an unassisted goal by Bender. In goal, junior Diana Pragel stopped seven shots, including six in the second half. Grove City out-shot the Bulldogs (0-1), 17-13. Grove City also had six corner kicks, compared to three for Adrian.

Westminster 1, Aurora 1

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Westminster College women's soccer team opened the 2007 with a 1-1 deadlock. The Titans tied the game in the 82nd minute on a goal by Brittany McKee (Hubbard), which was the senior defender's seventh career goal. Senior midfielder Kait Etzel-Hardman assisted. Aurora (0-0-1) score was by Kim Knaub in the 39th minute. Westminster sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Mellott (Lakeview) made eight saves. Aurora outshot the Titans 14-12.

Mount Union 2, Westminster 1

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Titans (0-1) surrendered two unanswered goals including Mount Union's game-winner with five seconds remaining in double overtime. The Purple Raiders (1-0) found the back of the net when Tod Booth buried a cross from Steve Gillespie after the teams played 19:55 of a scoreless overtime. Westminster broke a scoreless tie in the 65th minute of regulation when senior Garrett Horvath scored on a cross from sophomore Ian Hill. Mount Union knotted the game at 1-1 with Josh Donnelly's unassisted goal at the 71:20 mark. The Titans out-shot the Purple Raiders, 15-12, led by senior Andrew Saporito with six shots. Goalkeeper Mike Codita made 13 saves in his college debut.

Penn State Altoona 1, Grove City 0

GROVE CITY, Pa. — Penn State Altoona (1-0) broke a scoreless tie in the 75th minute as Bryan Pierzga scored off a free kick. For Grove City (0-1), senior goalkeeper Michael Manahan stopped five shots. Penn State Altoona out-shot Grove City, 13-5. The Lions also had six corner kicks, compared to two for Grove City.
