Boardman man accused of defrauding elderly man

BOARDMAN — A Salinas Trail man faces eight felony charges, accused of defrauding an elderly man.

Daniel Nicoara, 32, is charged with five counts of tampering with records, two counts of forgery and one count of theft by deception with an elderly victim. His preliminary hearing is set for Thursday in Mahoning County Area Court.

Detective Glenn Patton said that Nicoara became acquainted with an 81-year-old man who lives in the township. The elderly man, a World War II and Korean War veteran who suffers from Parkinson’s disease and poor eyesight, has a business in Rogers with another man.

Nicoara is accused of furnishing the victim with five fictitious vehicle titles for vehicles he didn’t own and charging the victim for them. The fake titles were handwritten.

Patton said that Nicoara also persuaded the elderly man to give him $5,600, saying he needed the money for child support.

The forgery counts stem from checks that Nicoara is accused of counterfeiting and giving to the victim in return for cash.

The incidents occurred between June and August, the detective said.

The victim’s business partner told him to contact police upon seeing the fictitious titles.

Nicoara, who was lodged in the Mahoning County Jail, also has an unrelated forgery case pending in common pleas court.
