Flyers 2, Bruins 1

BOSTON — Martin Biron stopped 38 shots and Mike Richards had a short-handed goal to lift Philadelphia over Boston on Saturday in a game marred by Flyers defenseman Randy Jones’ ferocious hit on Bruins center Patrice Bergeron. Bergeron lost consciousness and was taken from the ice on a stretcher during the first period after he was hammered face-first into the boards by Jones. As the whistle blew, Boston’s Chuck Kobasew went after Jones, drawing a two-minute roughing penalty. Jones drew a 5-minute major and a game misconduct. Bergeron was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital and was diagnosed with a concussion and a broken nose by Bruins team physician Dr. Bertram Zarins.

Maple Leafs 4, Rangers 1

NEW YORK — Pavel Kubina’s first of the season woke up the Maple Leafs in the second period and started a three-goal binge against the stingy Rangers that carried Toronto to the victory. The defenseman lifted the Leafs into a 1-1 tie at 8:35, just 2:51 after Jaromir Jagr gave the Rangers the lead. Until then, New York held the advantage on the scoreboard and shot clock with a 20-7 edge. Toronto, which entered with the most goals in the NHL (42) and most allowed (44), grabbed a 2-1 edge on John Pohl’s first with 4:14 left. Nik Antropov pushed the lead to two goals, sweeping a shot past Lundqvist as he stood untouched in front.

Hurricanes 8, Islanders 3

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Rod Brind’Amour notched his third career hat trick, Ray Whitney and Justin Williams each scored twice and Carolina scored six times on its first 13 shots. Eric Staal also scored for Carolina, which got three power-play goals and another just as a power play ended. Backup goalie John Grahame picked up his first win of the season by making 25 saves.

Senators 4, Devils 1

NEWARK, N.J. — Ottawa spoiled New Jersey’s first game in the new Prudential Center, scoring three times in the third period. Brian Gionta scored on a deflection for the Devils, who played their first nine games on the road while waiting for the $380 million arena to be completed. Martin Gerber made 31 saves for Ottawa (9-1) while Martin Brodeur stopped 23 shots for New Jersey. Ottawa’s Andrej Meszaros scored the arena’s first goal 5 minutes into the second period with a slap shot from just inside the blue line that squeezed through a crowd in front to beat Brodeur. The Senators also got goals from Shean Donovan, Mike Fisher and Daniel Alfredsson.

Sabres 4, Lightning 3, OT

TAMPA, Fla. — Thomas Vanek scored late in overtime and Buffalo rallied to beat Tampa Bay. During a 2-on-1, Vanek tried to pass the puck from along the right-wing boards to teammate Nathan Paetsch in the slot, but the puck deflected off a Tampa Bay defender into the net with 40.5 seconds left. Vincent Lecavalier gave the Lightning a 3-2 lead on a wrist shot from the right circle during a 5-on-3 power play at 6:14 of the third. Vinny Prospal and Michel Ouellet also scored for the Lightning. The Sabres pulled even at 3 when Paetsch stopped a personal 22-game goal-scoring drought from the low left-circle with 6:47 remaining in the period. Maxim Afinogenov and Paul Gaustad had the other Buffalo goals.

Predators 4, Panthers 3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vernon Fiddler scored a pair of goals to lead Nashville past Florida.

With 13 seconds left in regulation, Radek Bonk skated behind the net and put the puck in on a backhand shot that bounced off of the lower back of Jerred Smithson and into the net. The goal was credited to Smithson. Bonk scored earlier in the game. Olli Jokinen scored two power play goals for Carolina. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Jozef Stumpel’s penalty shot beat goalie Dan Ellis to his glove side with 9:46 remaining.

Thrashers 3, Blackhawks 2

CHICAGO — Ilya Kovalchuk scored a tie-breaking goal early in the third period and set up Vyacheslav Kozlov’s two power-play scores to lead Atlanta over Chicago. Kovalchuk connected on a breakaway at 3:51 of the third to snap a 1-all tie, as Atlanta handed Chicago its third straight loss. Chicago’s Patrick Kane, the NHL’s first overall draft pick last summer, scored a power-play goal. Jason Williams scored a power-play goal with 1:09 left to cut it to 3-2 and set up Kane’s goal. Chicago rookie Jonathan Toews also assisted on Kane’s goal to extend his point streak to nine games. Toews, who missed Chicago’s first two games with a broken finger, has a point in each contest he’s played so far. Atlanta’s Johan Hedberg made 29 saves. Lalime blocked 19 shots.

Blues 4, Capitals 3

ST. LOUIS — Brad Boyes scored twice and St. Louis defeated Washington. Boyes’ second goal broke a 2-2 tie late in the second period. Ryan Johnson lead Boyes with a short pass to the blue line where Boyes collected it, took two strides into the Washington zone before blasting a slap shot past Brent Johnson with 1:19 remaining.

Christian Backman and Eric Brewer also scored for St. Louis. Washington tied the score with consecutive goals from Mike Green after falling behind 2-0. Michael Nylander also scored for the Capitals.
