Town hall meeting
MERCER, Pa. — U.S. Rep. Phil English, of Erie, R-3rd, will host a town hall meeting from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. today at the Lackawannock Township Building, 1742 Mercer-West Middlesex Road.
Philadelphia man held
in attempted homicide
SHARON, Pa. — A Philadelphia man is charged with attempted homicide after police said he choked a woman until she was unconscious. Sharon Police arrested Robert Thompkins, 29, at 10:30 p.m. Thursday at a home on the 400 block of Walnut Street. When they arrived, they found Thompkins choking an unconscious 26-year-old woman on the ground. Police said when the woman regained consciousness, she told them she ran into Thompkins outside the home and he threatened to kill her with a gun and then started to choke her. Police later determined the gun was a BB gun. Police said Thompkins was acquainted with the woman before the attack. She refused treatment, police said. Police said when they arrested Thompkins, he had 12 individually wrapped pieces of suspected crack cocaine in his pockets. He is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver. Thompkins was taken to the Mercer County Jail after arraignment, and his bail was set at $100,000.
Police officer honored
WARREN — A city police officer is being recognized for his efforts and dedication to the city. Lt. Joe Marhulik, 50, was named the Crisis Intervention Team Coordinator of the Year, and city council passed a resolution commending him. Marhulik is a lifelong Trumbull County resident and has been with the police department for 22 years. Marhulik said the award is not his alone. He shares it with the police department as a whole. The Crisis Intervention Unit teaches police officers how to respond to people with mental health problems. He is the fifth police officer in Ohio to receive this honor.
Woman reports stabbing
WARREN — Police were dispatched to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital for a woman who said she was stabbed. The victim said a group of people attacked her and her friend Thursday afternoon on Belmont Street Northeast. She said they were in her car when the group of three women and one man were walking in the middle of the road. The group attacked the car, and they got into a scuffle. The physician at the hospital said the slash was about 1.5 inches wide and 5 inches long, according to the police report.
Niles Halloween events
NILES — The city’s Halloween parade begins at 2 p.m. Sunday on the corner of Dragon Drive and Federal Street near McKinley High School. It will go to state Route 46 to Robbins Avenue, then make a left on State Street, which will lead to Main Street, then back to Federal. Trick-or-treat hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Man says he was robbed
NILES — Police are investigating the armed robbery of a Fulton Avenue man that netted thieves only $4. The victim told police he heard a knock at the front door of his home about 11:15 a.m. Thursday. When he went to the door, two men forced their way into his house. One of men pulled a knife and threatened him, saying they wanted money to bail a man out of jail and retrieve an impounded car. They took $4 from his shirt pocket before leaving.
‘Walk Warm’ program
COLUMBIANA — The Columbiana Village School District’s “Walk Warm” program will resume Monday. The program allows adults to walk indoors through hallways at Columbiana High School, allowing them to get exercise during inclement weather. The building is open to walkers from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except on school holidays or when school is canceled. A measured course is posted for walkers who choose to keep an accurate log of distance.
