Mercer: Repeal Act 44

MERCER, Pa. — Mercer County commissioners joined with other counties in the I-80 corridor in asking for repeal of Act 44, a state law that passed in July and will impose tolls on the Interstate and raise tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in 2009. Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution Thursday that asks for repeal of the law and also asking the Federal Highway Administration to deny the joint application filed by Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the turnpike commission seeking federal authorization to toll and improve the road. Commissioner Olivia Lazor said Union and Clarion counties already have passed similar resolutions, and Venango County is expected to pass one soon. The resolution states tolling of the I-80 “would be a severe deterrent to business, industry and economic development, not only in Mercer County, but Pennsylvania as a whole.”
