HALLOWEEN HIGHLIGHTS On television


When it comes to holidays, Halloween is No. 2 for the tube, right behind Christmas. The next week’s schedule loads up on frights, hauntings, costume parties and spoofs of same. Among the highlights leading up to Wednesday’s big night:

FAMILY FUN

“An American Haunting” (Friday, 8 p.m., ABC Family) — The 2005 film airs in the channel’s annual 13 Nights of Halloween stunt, continuing through Wednesday. Other titles include “Stephen King’s It” (Saturday 8 p.m.), the “Scooby-Doo” and “Scooby-Doo 2” movies (Sunday 8 and 10 p.m.) and “Poltergeist” (Wednesday 7:30 p.m.).

“Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (Friday 9 p.m., Saturday noon, Disney) — A second movie with Daniel Radcliffe as the young wizard: “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” (Saturday 11 a.m., HBO2; Wednesday 7 p.m., HBO Family).

“Scariest Places” marathon (Saturday 8 a.m.-8 p.m., ABC Family) — Families stay at haunted castles, mental institutions and other fear-inducing quarters.

“Halloweentown High” (Saturday noon, Disney) — Debbie Reynolds is back in another witchy holiday flick. Also airing: “Return to Halloweentown” (Monday 8 p.m., Disney).

TEENick Halloween marathon (Sunday 5-9 p.m., Nickelodeon) — Programs include “iCarly,” “Zoey 101” and “The Naked Brothers Band.” Another marathon airs Wednesday from 2-9 p.m.

“Edgar and Ellen” (Sunday 8:30 p.m., Nicktoons) — The pranksters from the popular book series celebrate Halloween.

Nick Jr. Halloween marathon (Monday 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Nickelodeon) — Little kids can enjoy holiday episodes of “Dora the Explorer,” “Blue’s Clues,” “Yo Gabba Gabba!” and other favorites.

“It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” (Tuesday 8 p.m., ABC) — The 1966 animated Peanuts special gets its annual run.

TRICKS AND TREATS

America’s Scariest Halloween Attractions 2 (Friday at 11 p.m., Travel) — Visit creepy locales.

“Halloween Madness” (Saturday at 8 p.m., TLC) — Decorating runs wild at suburban homes transformed into haunted houses.

“The Martha Stewart Show” (Wednesday 1 p.m., NBC) — Rosie O’Donnell guests in the craft room and kitchen on this special Halloween edition.

HALLOWEEN EPISODES

“Bones” (Tuesday 8 p.m., Fox) — Brennan and friends dress up for Halloween (as Wonder Woman and Cher, among others) while investigating the mummified remains of a teenage girl at a Halloween pumpkin patch maze.

“Roseanne” (Wednesday 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Oxygen) — Nobody loved fright night more than the Conners, seen in celebratory episodes from seven seasons (aired in order).

REALITY SCARES

“Phenomenon” (Wednesday 8-10 p.m., NBC) — The second episode of the Criss Angel-Uri Geller “search for the next great mentalist” is a two-hour live Halloween special.

“Ghost Hunters Live” (Wednesday 9 p.m.-3 a.m., Sci Fi) — “America’s favorite paranormal plumbers” do their second live Halloween investigation, at the haunted Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Ky.

“Taboo: Gross Food” (Wednesday 10 p.m., NatGeo) — Be spooked by such global cultural customs as snacking on cockroaches, dining on worms and swallowing the still-beating heart of a snake.

MOVIES

“Creepshow” and “Creepshow 2” (Friday 9 and 11:30 a.m., AMC) — AMC’s annual Monsterfest continues nonstop through Wednesday. Highlights include “The Exorcist” double feature (Saturday 8 and 10:30 p.m.) and six “Halloween” movies screened in order (Wednesday 10 a.m.-10 p.m.).

“Carnival of Souls” (Friday night at 2 a.m., Turner Classic Movies) — The eerily effective low-budget 1962 cult fave premieres on the “TCM Underground” showcase.

“The Blair Witch Project” (Saturday 4 p.m., FX) — The low-tech 1999 fright flick gets another run.

“Scary Movie” (Saturday 8 p.m., NBC) — Keenan Ivory Wayans’ horror spoof stars brothers Shawn and Marlon alongside Carmen Electra, Shannon Elizabeth, Cheri Oteri and a cast of dozens. (Sequels air, too: “Scary Movie 2” Saturday night at 12:10 a.m. and Sunday at 2:45 p.m. on TBS; “Scary Movie 3” Saturday at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central.)

“Headless Horseman” (Saturday at 9 p.m., Sci Fi) — Richard Moll (Bull of “Night Court”) stars in this new tale of teens lost on the way to a Halloween party and suddenly slated to serve as the locals’ sacrifice to the title ghoul.

MARATHONS

“Friday the 13th”/”Halloween”/”Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (Tuesday-Wednesday, Monsters HD) — In high definition: Nine Jason films air in order (Tuesday 7 a.m.-9:45 p.m., 9:45 p.m.-Wednesday 12:30 p.m.), followed by six “Halloween” films (Wednesday 12:30 p.m.-11:15 p.m.) and three “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” titles (Wednesday 11:15 p.m.-4 a.m.).

Boris Karloff tribute (Wednesday 8 p.m., TCM) — Seven-film fright fest includes “Bedlam,” “The Invisible Ray,” “The Body Snatcher,” the influential 1932 chiller “The Old Dark House” and three others.
