Detective: Shooting was in self-defense

YOUNGSTOWN — A home invasion likely led to the shooting death of Joeray L. Redmond, a city detective says.

Redmond, 27, of Hudson Avenue, was found collapsed in a yard in the 2600 block of Volney Road on the South Side around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. He had bullet wounds to his chest and side. A handgun lay near the body.

Capt. Kenneth Centorame, chief of detectives, said Thursday that it looks like Redmond was shot during a home invasion at 2704 Volney by the resident, Louis K. Davis, 49. The facts will be presented to a Mahoning County grand jury, Centorame said, adding that the case appears to be self defense.

Detectives believe Redmond had at least one accomplice; police are trying to locate him, Centorame said. The gun found by Redmond was jammed, and results of a gunshot residue test will determine if he fired it.

Davis, a convicted felon, was arrested on charges of having a weapon and falsification of a police report. Felons are prohibited from possessing firearms.

He had reported his car stolen Wednesday, but later admitted it had been towed and impounded by the drug task force.

Davis was expected to be arraigned today in municipal court.

Police investigating the death of Redmond found the door open at Davis’ home, glass on the porch, bullet holes and casings inside. During a later search, an automatic rifle was found, and Davis admitted to detectives that it was his, reports show.

Centorame said Davis served 16 years in prison for a 1988 rape and aggravated burglary.

Based on his rape conviction, Davis is registered as a sexually oriented offender with the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department. His address, though, is shown as Franklin Avenue, not Volney Road. Sex offenders must register their current address or face prosecution.
