YOUNGSTOWN — City police are looking for leads in the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old man about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in a home on Volney Road.

The victim, Joeray Redmond, suffered several gunshot wounds to the chest and side. The police report lists two addresses for Redmond — one on Parkcliff Avenue and another on Hudson Avenue.

Police said it appears he was shot in the house at 2704 Volney, then left the house and collapsed in a nearby front yard at 2664 Volney.

Police found the victim lying face down with his head pointing north and a semiautomatic handgun inches from his right hand. The report does not indicate if it is the weapon that caused Redmond’s death.

One person questioned by police said he heard six or seven shots. A neighbor said she heard something hit her house, and police found a bullet lodged in the vinyl siding of the home.

Police said the door at 2704 Volney was open and there was glass on the front porch. Inside the house, they found numerous bullet holes in walls and shell casings.

Also during the search, police confiscated a large-caliber automatic rifle, which the occupant, Louis K. Davis, 49, later said was his. Davis was not at his home when police first arrived.

Police were at the Davis residence shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, however, to investigate a stolen-car report.

Davis returned to his home about 4:50 p.m., while police were still at the scene investigating the shooting. Officers said Davis admitted filing a false stolen-car report and that the automatic rifle is his.

As a consequence, Davis was charged with making a false police report about the stolen car and with being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon, the report said.

Police said they did not know if there was any relationship between the victim and Davis.

If Redmond’s death is ruled a homicide, it would be the city’s third in the last four days, and the 27th so far this year.
