Massillon honors
Brown with museum

MASSILLON — A Paul E. Brown Museum is being planned to honor the former Massillon High coach who went on to coach Ohio State, the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals.

Brown coached the Massillon Tigers to an 80-8-2 record with six state and four national championships. He led the Ohio State Buckeyes to their first national championship, was the first coach of the Cleveland Browns, and founded the Cincinnati Bengals.

The 3,000-square-foot Paul E. Brown Museum, to be located at One Paul E. Brown Drive Southeast in Massillon, on the campus of Washington High School, will be adjacent to Paul Brown Tiger Stadium and the school, where it will be accessible to the public and to students.

Because all artifacts will be secured behind glass, the museum can be unattended and accessible. Admission will be free; donations will be accepted.

To learn more about the Paul E. Brown Museum, a 501(c)3 organization, contact Bill Dorman at (330) 495-2147 or teammates@PaulEBrownMuseum.com.

Indians open
with White Sox

CLEVELAND — Say it ain’t snow.

The Cleveland Indians, whose home opener this season was postponed by snow in April, will open their 2008 season on March 31 against the Chicago White Sox — the earliest home opener in Cleveland’s history.

It’s first time the AL Central champions have played their season opener at home since 2001.

“It will be fun to open a baseball season at home after all the excitement this year,” general manager Mark Shapiro said Wednesday.

Not if it’s 23 degrees and blustery.

Last season, a season-opening four-game series against Seattle was postponed when a freak spring storm dumped nearly two feet of snow on Cleveland. The threat of more bad weather forced the Indians to relocate a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels to Milwaukee’s Miller Park, which has a roof.

The rescheduling was a hardship for the Indians, who had make up some of the games with doubleheaders.

After playing twice at Jacobs Field against the White Sox, Cleveland will go on a six-game road trip out West to Oakland and Los Angeles, where the weather promises to be a little nicer at that time of year than in northeast Ohio.

When they get home, the Indians will play two with the Athletics before Boston comes to town for two games in a rematch of this year’s thrilling AL championship series won by the Red Sox in seven games.

Also, the New York Yankees will make their only visit to Cleveland from April 25-28. The Indians are in New York for three May 6-8.

The Indians will close the regular season with four games in Boston (Sept. 22-25) followed by three in Chicago (Sept. 26-28).

Among other highlights of the schedule: the Indians will play interleague road games at Cincinnati (May 16-18), at NL champion Colorado (June 17-19) and at Los Angeles (June 20-22). NL teams to visit Jacobs Field will be: San Diego (June 13-15), San Francisco (June 24-26) and the Reds (June 27-29).
