Man fatally shot on city’s South Side

YOUNGSTOWN — City police are looking for leads in the fatal shooting of a man at about 3 p.m. today in a home on Volney Road.

Police are not releasing the identity of the victim pending notification of next of kin.

Police Capt. Kenneth Centorame said it appears the victim was shot at 2407 Volney, then left the South Side house and collapsed in the front yard of a nearby home, where he was found by police.

The Mahoning County Coroner’s office also is investigating.

Police were at 2407 Volney about an hour before the shooting to investigate a stolen car report, Centorame said.

When they returned, the occupant, Louis K. Davis, 49, was not there. Davis, however, was later arrested and charged with making a false police report about the stolen car and with being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon, Centorame said.

He said police do not believe the victim was living at the Volney address where he was shot, and they do not know if there was any relationship between the victim and Davis.

If ruled a homicide, it would be the city’s third in the last four days, and the 27th so far this year.
