Colleen Duncan
paces Bulldogs

POLAND — For the second week in a row Colleen Duncan, No. 3 singles, helped Poland High School win a match in the Ohio Coaches Athletic Association team tennis tournament.

Duncan broke a 2-2 tie two weeks ago in winning a regional singles match against Hathaway Brown that earned the Bulldogs 3-2 win and a spot in the OCAA tennis state team finals.

Sunday at Ohio State University’s Stickney Tennis Center Duncan again broke a 2-2 tie winning a 6-4, 6-2 match against Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy that helped the Bulldogs post a 3-2 victory and place third in the Ohio Coaches A.A. state team tennis tournament.

The Bulldogs’ Alyssa Tom lost 7-5, 6-1 in at No. 1 singles and Gabrielle Brocker lost 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while Megan Bennett-Jessica Mullis won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles and Alexa Marino-Danielle Mullis won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Coach Pam Steinhauser of Poland said, “All year all the kids have played solid.” In second doubles I have been able to count on them to come always come through and Duncan has been our secret weapon.”

The Bulldogs had Bennett-Jessica Mullins and Tom compete in the Division II State tennis tournament last Friday and they were eliminated in first round competition. Poland completed its season with a 24-2 record.

“We set a school record,” said Steinhauser in her 15th season as Poland coach. “It was the first time ever that a Poland boys or girls team made it to state in the sport of tennis.”

“The big accomplishment was that the girls didn’t play in many tournaments in the off season and still made it to state,” said Steinhauser. “This was the best season I’ve had since I began coaching here.”
