COLUMBIANA — The Italian Heritage Foundation Awards Committee is accepting applications submitted by 501-C organizations. Each year the foundation awards money from interest earned on the Italian Heritage Foundation Trust account to selected organizations that apply. After assessing each application and their needs, recipients will be selected to receive this year’s monetary awards.

UAW signing bonuses

LORDSTOWN — Members of United Auto Workers Local 1112 at Lordstown will soon be getting their $3,000 contract signing bonuses. A flier sent to the union membership Sunday said the money will be in their next week’s paychecks. The flier also noted that the local shop committee continues to meet daily on resolving a number of open issues related to the contract. The committee and local management are awaiting direction from the national parties on some of those items, the flier said.

Liberty leaf pickup

LIBERTY — Leaf collection in the township will be done in two phases. The first phase will take place Nov. 28 and include all residents south of Church Hill Road. The second phase will take place Nov. 29 and include all residents north of Church Hill Road. Only township-issued biodegradable plastic bags or paper yard-waste bags will be collected with only leaves and no trash inside. The bags must be tied with no tape, strings or staples used. Paper bags must be left open. Bags must be placed near the road by 7 a.m. of the collection date.

Home-buyer workshop

YOUNGSTOWN — Family Financial Education Services is sponsoring a first-time home-buyer workshop Nov. 7. The free workshop is designed to cover basic home-buying information such as determining affordability, budgeting, credit problems and the loan application process. All participants will receive a certificate of attendance that will satisfy the education requirements for some mortgage programs. The workshop will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Family Service Agency, 535 Marmion Ave. Participants must pre-register by calling (330) 782-5664.

Mulling reappointment

AKRON — The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is considering whether to reappoint Marilyn Shea-Stonum, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Northern District of Ohio at Akron to another 14-year term. Her current term expires Sept. 18, 2008.

Members of the bar and public are invited to submit comments for consideration by the Court of Appeals before it decides. All comments will be kept confidential and should be directed to the Office of the Circuit Executive, 503 Potter Stewart United States Courthouse, 100 E. Fifth St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202. All comments must be received no later than Nov. 16.

Fun Day for Kids set

BOARDMAN — The Mahoning County Court Appointed Special Advocates/Guardian ad Litem Program will have a Fun Day for Kids from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10. The CASA/GAL fundraiser will be at the Bounce Around Indoor Party Center, 215 McClurg Road. The event features inflatable bounces, slides, carnival games, magicians and clowns. Cost is $5 per child. First Night volunteers

YOUNGSTOWN — First Night Youngstown is seeking volunteers for its party in downtown Youngstown on Dec. 31 from 6 p.m. to midnight. First Night is an annual event of arts and entertainment.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Those who work a three-hour shift are given free access to First Night events. All volunteers must attend one orientation meeting in mid-December.
