Man shot in arm during robbery

YOUNGSTOWN — Three suspects were arrested after a 50-year-old Vindicator carrier was robbed and shot in the arm around 11:30 a.m. today on the South Side.

The condition of Arthur Williams at St. Elizabeth Health Center was not immediately available because he was still in the emergency room.

Detective Sgt. Ron Rodway said the carrier had dropped off a newspaper at 50 Hilton Ave. and continued on his route, with two or three suspects following him. When Williams got behind a car wash nearby on Judson Avenue, one of the suspects pulled a gun and fired, the detective said.

Police tracked the suspects back to the house on Hilton. An adult and two juveniles were taken into custody.

Patrolmen P.J. Chance and Jeff Roberts used a ladder from the fire department to climb to the roof of 50 Hilton to search for a gun. Members of the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force Crisis Response Team were also on the scene, responding to a report that a suspect had been on the roof. The suspect re-entered the house, Rodway said, adding it has no water service and appears vacant.
