Through the years

A look at the history of Antioch College:

1852: Antioch College is founded by the Christian Church, with Horace Mann becoming its first president.

1862: Antioch closes because of financial problems, reopening three years later.

1920: Antioch adopts concept of cooperative education in which students combine classroom learning with on-the-job training.

1951: Coretta Scott King graduates from Antioch.

1965: Martin Luther King gives commencement address.

1993: Antioch adopts sexual offense prevention policy in which students are required to ask and receive consent for each step of romantic contact.

2000: Mumia Abu-Jamal, convicted of killing a Philadelphia police officer in 1981 and then on death row, gives taped commencement address.

2007: Antioch says financial problems will force it to suspend operations in July 2008 and reopen in 2012.
