SteelHounds beat ’Kings, stay perfect


Youngstown will hold the “Halloween Cup” today at the Chevy Centre.

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — Joel Irving’s two goals Saturday led the Youngstown SteelHounds (2-0-0) to a 4-3 victory over Northeast Division rival Mississippi RiverKings.

Goalie Andy Franck was named the game’s first star as he stopped 28 of 31 Mississippi shots. The RiverKings are 1-1-0.

The RiverKings struck first as Derek Landmesser notched a power-play goal just 1:42 into the game.

Jeff Alcombrack answered back for the Hounds with a power-play goal to tie the game.

Irving scored his first of two on a power play to give the Hounds a 2-1 lead after one period. The Hounds were 2-6 with the man advantage.

The second period started out like the first with Mississippi tying the game thanks to Chad Wollard's first of the season at the 3:37 mark.

Youngstown grabbed the lead back thanks to Eric Przepiorka's first goal as a SteelHound just 1:14 later.

The RiverKings did not go quietly as Ryan Campbell tied the game off a Derek Landmesser shot to make it 3-3 after two periods.

The RiverKings were just 1-10 on the power play and in the third period.

Irving’s second goal came on a short-handed situation with 6:01 to play.

Today, the SteelHounds arrive home to relax before staying on the road for 25 days to finish off a 14-game road trip to start the season.

Today at 5 p.m., the SteelHounds will present Coach Kevin Kaminski’s second annual “Halloween Cup” at the Chevrolet Centre. This event is open to the public as the Hounds will play in a three-on-three tournament dressed in their Halloween costumes. A $5 donation will be requested.
