Make A Difference Day to be observed

YOUNGSTOWN — Make A Difference Day, a national day of helping others, is coming up Saturday.

It was created by USA Weekend magazine, and the program involves millions of people doing a wide variety of projects to help others.

Here are a couple of local projects:

UTeacher Jeanne Constantino at East High School received a Martha Holden Jennings grant to make “No Sew” fleece blankets. Students in two special needs classes at the school are making the blankets to be given to children in the city schools who are living in group homes and temporary shelters. More will be distributed at Christmas.

When the grant money to buy materials runs out, the classes plan to hold fundraisers to keep the program going.

UYoungstown’s Adult Basic Literacy Education program plans to “Treat the Children” of the Valley. It is collecting treat bags to be distributed at local shelters Saturday. The program asks that decorated treat bags contain one hygiene product, one school supply and a few pieces of candy.

Bags can be dropped off through Thursday at Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St.
