YOUNGSTOWN — If you are a graduate of The Rayen School and would like a memento from the building on Benita Avenue before it is razed, now is your chance. The school district will have a public auction at the school at 9 a.m. Saturday to sell off various items before the building is torn down. It will be replaced by a new middle school on the same site. The district had a similar auction at Woodrow Wilson High School in late summer. It is also being replaced by a new middle school.
Districts to be honored
BOARDMAN — The annual “From Steel to Scholars” educational recognition awards will be presented to 11 area school districts at a luncheon Wednesday at Antone’s Banquet Center. The program honors school districts in the Mahoning Valley rated as “excellent” on the state local report card. Eric D. Fingerhut, Ohio’s chancellor of higher education, will be the keynote speaker. Districts being honored are: Boardman, Canfield, Champion, Columbiana, Girard, Howland, Lakeview, Lowellville, Poland, South Range and Western Reserve.
Lawrence board vacancy
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Anyone interested in serving on the Lawrence County Housing Authority board of directors should send a letter of interest to the Lawrence County Commissioners. Commissioner Dan Vogler formally announced that they are seeking a candidate for the vacancy on the board. Commissioners received a letter late last week from former state Rep. Frank LaGrotta of Ellwood City, resigning. LaGrotta is currently under investigation by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office on allegations of giving state jobs to relatives and inflating their pay while in elected office. LaGrotta’s term ends in December 2008. Anyone interested must submit to a criminal background check. The position is nonpaying.
Disaster training
BOARDMAN — An organization aimed at mobilizing volunteer medical people to aid victims during a local catastrophe will have a free training class froom 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Inn Boardman, 7410 South Ave. The class is sponsored by the Mahoning/Columbiana County Medical Reserve Corps under the umbrella of the Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency. Health-care professionals from any discipline are wanted for emergency and nonemergency needs. Culvert reconstruction
ELLSWORTH — The Ohio Department of Transportation plans to reconstruct the eroded roadway embankment on both sides on U.S. Route 224 in Ellsworth Township, near Meander Creek. As part of the project, ODOT will relocate the culvert through the base of the road embankment at the eastern leg of Gault Road and regrade the ditch on the south side of Route 224. During construction, traffic will be maintained with the use of flaggers. The $650,000 project is expected to begin in spring 2008 and be completed by winter 2008.
