Spartans win 21-13; Fitch falls at Lake
Beaver Local and West Branch also earned victories.
CANTON — Cameron Shaffer raced 20 yards to a touchdown and Phil Curl kicked the extra point in the third quarter to provide some insurance for Boardman in a 21-13 victory over Canton GlenOak in a Federal League game Friday night.
The Spartans (6-3, 4-2 FL) led 14-13 at halftime and had a goal line stand late in the game. The win keeps their playoff hopes alive. They entered the game sixth in the Division I, Region 1 computer ratings.
Damien Jarrett, Tyler Amendola and Nick Tuminello also sparked Boardman’s offense. Jarrett ran 26 yards to Boardman’s first score while Amendola caught a 22-yard scoring strike from Tuminello in the second period. Curl was 3-for-3 in extra-point kicks.
Tuminello was 4-for-4 passing for 88 yards while Jarrett rushed for 54 yards in 15 carries. Jeremy Hobby caught three passes for 64 yards.
GlenOak (5-4, 2-4) got its TDs on Justin Szink’s 31-yard connection to Thomas Helmick, and Trai Heart’s 43-yard strike to Zack Hatchett.
Szink was 5-for-13 passes for 72 yards. Anthony Smith rushed for 70 yards in 21 carries.

Chaney 16
LISBON — The Beavers (2-7) built a 14-8 lead by halftime and the Cowboys (0-9) couldn’t recover.
The Beavers’ Mitch Thompson rushed for 164-yards on 20 carries, which included a 2-yard TD. Devon Ludwig gained 122 yards on 20 tries and he scored on runs of 1, 32 and 1 yard.
Marquel Smith gained 52 yards on 16 carries for the Cowboys and he scored on a 1-yard run to give Chaney an early 8-0 lead.
The Beavers rushed for 350 yards and passed for 38. Chaney gained 91 yards rushing and 88 passing.

Fitch 22
UNIONTOWN — Sylvestri Gibbs ran for two touchdowns to lead Fitch (1-8, 0-6 Federal League), which has lost eight straight games after an opening win against Chaney.
Tyler Crowl and Gene Onabiyi each scored two touchdowns for the Blue Streaks (6-3, 4-3), who led 33-7 at halftime.

Youngstown Christian 28
ANDOVER — Randy Triplett rushed for 67 yards and passed for another 193, but it wasn’t enough for the Eagles (5-3, 3-2 East Suburban Conference).
Triplett scored on runs of 10, 17 and 1 yard. He also hit John Pecchia with a 5-yard scoring toss.
Ed Gonda and Toba Olarewaju each caught four passes (66 yards for Gonda, 42 for Olarewaju)
Clayton Kirby scored four touchdowns to keep the Lakers (8-1, 5-0 East Suburban Conference) atop the league standings.
Kirby rushed for two scores (9, 71 and 24 yards) and returned a fumble 6 yards. He rushed for 184 yards on 19 carries.
Josh Pilson scored runs of 20 and 35 yards. He finished with 128 yards on 18 carries.

BELOIT — Steve McNeely passed for 232 yards and three touchdowns for West Branch (7-2, 4-2 Northeastern Buckeye Conference).
Corey Catania rushed for 100 yards on 18 carries and Vinnie Mazzei caught two of McNeely’s touchdown tosses. Jeremiah James caught six passes for 100 yards and one touchdown.
The Warriors can clinch a ployoff berth next week with a victory at home against Marlington.
