Diamond sale on hold

LISBON — The Seventh District Court of Appeals has temporarily stopped the sale of a 4-carat diamond. The court late Thursday issued a temporary stay pending a hearing that will be held at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 7 in Lisbon. Craig E. Newbold of Columbiana and his wife, Hilda, bought the diamond as an investment from William Kimpel of Columbiana, and then asked him to sell it. Court documents say he then used the diamond in a financial transaction with Esteco Inc., also of Columbiana. Judge C. Ashley Pike of Columbiana County Common Pleas Court has ruled that Kimpel betrayed the Newbolds and that Esteco properly recorded its legal interest in the diamond. Esteco now wants to sell the diamond that has been valued at about $2 million. The appeals court ordered that the diamond remain in a safety deposit box.
