BUTLER, Pa. — Teresita S. Hartz, recently retired teacher after 36 years at Youngstown City Schools, is being honored tonight by Butler County Community College. Hartz, a member of BCC3’s Class of 1969, has been named recipient of a 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award by the college’s Alumni Association. She will be recognized at the Oak Hills Legacy Dinner tonight in Founders Hall. Hartz was a 2007-08 Teacher of the Year nominee in Youngstown.

Nursing pre-entrance test

WARREN — The Trumbull Career & Technical Center will administer a pre-entrance test for its School of Practical Nursing adult programs. The adult two-year program begins in February 2008 while the one-year day class will begin in August 2008. Students must take and pass a pre-entrance test to be admitted to either program. The test is 8:15 a.m. Oct. 31. For information, call the school at (330) 847-0503, Ext. 1420. A two-year tech prep high school practical nursing program for juniors and seniors is also offered at TCTC. Testing for that program will be Feb. 20, 2008.

Open house at campus

SHARON, Pa. — Penn State Shenango will hold an Adult Open House at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Room 222 of Lecture Hall. Topics will include degree programs available in business, human development and family studies, letters arts and sciences and nursing as well as associate degree and certificate programs. Ursuline raises funds

YOUNGSTOWN — The Ursuline High School girls volleyball team raised $1,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation at a recent match with Cardinal Mooney. The Ursuline team sold 175 pink “Volley For the Cure-800 Teams vs. Breast Cancer” event T-shirts. The goal was to increase awareness of breast cancer among high school students, staff and the community.

YOUNGSTOWN — Registration for free adult education courses sponsored by Youngstown Adult Basic and Literacy Education is held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday throughout the school year at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave. Classes include GED preparation, reading, math, writing, college preparation, job or career preparation and preparation for career entrance tests.

Official GED testing

YOUNGSTOWN — Choffin Career and Technical Center is offering official GED testing in November and December. The tests will be administered at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., and all participants must be preregistered and have a valid state identification. To register, call (330) 744-8715. Morning testing will be done Nov. 5, 6, 19 and 20 and Dec. 3 and 4. Afternoon testing will be offered Nov. 5 and 6 and Dec. 3 and 4.

Golden Trowel Award

GROVE CITY, Pa. — For the second time in two years, one of Grove City College’s newest buildings, Colonial Hall Apartments, has been awarded a Golden Trowel Award for excellence in masonry design and construction from the International Masonry Institute. The Breen Student Union received the same award two years ago. Colonial Hall, along with the Duda World Culture Building at California University of Pennsylvania, were judged the best in the higher education category. Now in its second year of operation, Colonial Hall offers apartment-style housing primarily for senior students. The $13 million building is located on lower campus and houses about 208 upperclassmen.

MCCTC Fall Design sale

CANFIELD — Mums are the calling cards of fall, and the horticulture floral shop at Mahoning County Career & Technical Center is filled with potted mums in vibrant colors, ready to plant. The seasonal flowers are part of the MCCTC Fall Design and Halloween Sale, now in progress each school day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., until Nov. 21. Also available to buy are autumn decorations, silk table and wall arrangements, and Halloween-themed items. Fresh centerpieces, corsages and boutonnières can be made to order for Homecoming, Thanksgiving and other seasonal celebrations. MCCTC horticulture students raised the plants as part of a two-year training program that prepares them for careers in greenhouse management, floral design and landscaping.
