Hearing postponed

SHARON, Pa. — The preliminary hearing for a Hubbard man accused of theft and writing bad checks has been postponed to Nov. 20. Nicholas J. Caesar, 53, of Bell Vista Drive, owned State Street Motors Inc., 1215 E. State St., Sharon, and sold six vehicles earlier this year. According to the police criminal complaint, Caesar borrowed about $70,000 from three financial institutions to purchase cars for his lot and failed to pay them back when he sold the cars. Police said Caesar wrote a $15,000 check to one of the loan companies which was returned for not having sufficient funds in the account.

Death threat probed

NILES — City police are continuing their investigation of a death threat this week at the middle school that resulted in an hourlong pupil lockdown. Capt. Chuck Wilson said no weapons were found Tuesday during a check of lockers and trash containers and a sweep of the outside groups. Wilson said someone had written in pencil on a second-floor boys restroom, “All will die.”

Attempted abduction

WARREN — A 56-year-old Warren woman told police a man attempted to abduct her at Belvedere Avenues and Woodland Street on the city’s Northeast Side. The woman told police she was walking at the intersection when a man stopped his car about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Believing he wanted directions, the woman told police she walked up to the car. The man grabbed her hand and attempted to force her into his car. He let her go when another car approached.

Spirit Day Parade

MINERAL RIDGE — Weathersfield School District’s Community Spirit Day Parade will step off at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ohltown-McDonald Road and travel to the middle school on state Route 46. The parade will wind up at the high school and will feature sports teams, bands, the fire department, candidates for election and collectible cars. The parade will be followed by a 4 p.m. powder puff football game between junior and senior girls at the Joe Lane Sports complex.

UAW offers flu shots

LORDSTOWN — United Auto Workers Local 1112 will have flu shots available Oct. 28 at the union hall, 11471 Reuther Drive. The shots will be given from 8 a.m. to noon, or until all doses are gone. The shots will cost $16, except for 1112 retires and their spouses, who will pay $14. The pubic is invited. The shots are not recommended for children under age 7.

Bank robbery suspect

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A man wanted in a bank robbery was found by police inside an East Reynolds Street home.

City police had received a tip that Calvin Smith, 35, of Waldo Street, was inside the home when they arrived at 9 p.m. Wednesday. Smith was wanted in the Oct. 9 robbery at First Commonwealth Bank on East Washington Street.

He is charged with robbery, recklessly endangering another person, criminal conspiracy and being a former convict prohibited from carrying a gun.

Police believe Smith was one of two men who came into the bank with guns, forced employees to the floor and took off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Shelter to sell items

YOUNGSTOWN — The Greater Youngstown Point Inc. is having a furniture and computer sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the homeless shelter it operates, 322 Wick Ave. The organization is offering sofas, tables, lamps, beds, computers, keyboards and monitors at affordable prices. All proceeds will benefit the shelter.
